Context
Isaiah offers King Ahaz a sign: a young woman (or virgin) will bear a son called Immanuel, "God with us". Matthew 1:22-23 sees it fulfilled in Jesus' birth.
Read it in its setting. The Hebrew word can mean "young woman"; the Greek translation Matthew quotes has "virgin", and English translations differ. The sign also spoke to Ahaz's own time (7:16).
