Context
God speaks to Jacob in a dream at Bethel as he flees from his brother. He promises to be with Jacob, protect him and bring him back to the land.
Read it in its setting. The promise was given to Jacob on his journey. Readers rightly take comfort in God's faithfulness from it, but it is not a guarantee of a particular outcome in every situation.
