The Bible Genealogy from Adam to Jesus

Every generation Scripture records from Adam to Jesus in one chart, each lineage in its own colour.

Scripture in WEBWorld English Bible — Protestant Edition

Luke traces Jesus’ family back through 76 names to Adam; Matthew begins with Abraham. Genesis 5 and 11 give the generations before Abraham, and Ruth 4 the line from Perez to David. Luke 3:23–38Matthew 1:1–16Genesis 5:1–32Genesis 11:10–26Ruth 4:18–22

After David the two Gospels follow different sons of David and Bathsheba: Matthew the kings descended from Solomon, Luke the line of Nathan. Both arrive at Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born. Matthew 1:6Luke 3:311 Chronicles 3:5Matthew 1:16

Reading the chart

  • Two lines after David. The left column is Matthew’s list (25 names from Solomon to Joseph’s father), the right column Luke’s (40 names from Nathan to Heli). Matthew arranges his list in three sets of fourteen generations and does not list every generation; a dashed line marks where generations are not all listed. Matthew 1:17
  • Joseph’s father. Matthew names Jacob and Luke names Heli. Both are shown as recorded; the chart does not choose between explanations. Matthew and Luke compared
  • Named in Luke only. Cainan appear in Luke 3 but not in Genesis 11 in the Hebrew text. Luke 3:36Genesis 11:12–13
  • “As was supposed.” Luke presents Joseph as Jesus’ father as people supposed; Matthew says Jesus was born of Mary. The dotted line marks Joseph as legal father. Luke 3:23Matthew 1:16Matthew 1:18–25
  • Other branches list children whose lines do not lead to Jesus, such as Cain, Ham, Japheth, Ishmael and Esau. Select a name to see that family.

Every relationship here comes from a cited passage. Solid lines are stated parent links; dashed lines mean generations are not all listed; dotted lines mark legal or adoptive parents; a question mark marks a disputed or interpretive link. Political succession and office are never drawn as family.
