Day 202 of 365
Isaiah: the same events as Kings · God is our refuge · The city of our God …
Psalms 46, 48 and 76 celebrate Zion's deliverance and are traditionally linked with Sennacherib's retreat; the psalms themselves do not name it.
Isaiah 38–39 WEB
38:1In those days Hezekiah was sick and near death. Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, came to him, and said to him, “The LORD says, ‘Set your house in order, for you will die, and not live.’” 2Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD, 3and said, “Remember now, LORD, I beg you, how I have walked before you in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in your sight.” Then Hezekiah wept bitterly. 4Then the LORD’s word came to Isaiah, saying, 5“Go, and tell Hezekiah, ‘The LORD, the God of David your father, says, “I have heard your prayer. I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add fifteen years to your life. 6I will deliver you and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria, and I will defend this city. 7This shall be the sign to you from the LORD, that the LORD will do this thing that he has spoken. 8Behold, I will cause the shadow on the sundial, which has gone down on the sundial of Ahaz with the sun, to return backward ten steps.”’” So the sun returned ten steps on the sundial on which it had gone down. 9The writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, when he had been sick, and had recovered of his sickness: 10I said, “In the middle of my life I go into the gates of Sheol. I am deprived of the residue of my years.” 11I said, “I won’t see the LORD, the LORD in the land of the living. I will see man no more with the inhabitants of the world. 12My dwelling is removed, and is carried away from me like a shepherd’s tent. I have rolled up my life like a weaver. He will cut me off from the loom. From day even to night you will make an end of me. 13I waited patiently until morning. He breaks all my bones like a lion. From day even to night you will make an end of me. 14I chattered like a swallow or a crane. I moaned like a dove. My eyes weaken looking upward. Lord, I am oppressed. Be my security.” 15What will I say? He has both spoken to me, and himself has done it. I will walk carefully all my years because of the anguish of my soul. 16Lord, men live by these things; and my spirit finds life in all of them. You restore me, and cause me to live. 17Behold, for peace I had great anguish, but you have in love for my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption; for you have cast all my sins behind your back. 18For Sheol can’t praise you. Death can’t celebrate you. Those who go down into the pit can’t hope for your truth. 19The living, the living, he shall praise you, as I do today. The father shall make known your truth to the children. 20The LORD will save me. Therefore we will sing my songs with stringed instruments all the days of our life in the LORD’s house. 21Now Isaiah had said, “Let them take a cake of figs, and lay it for a poultice on the boil, and he shall recover.” 22Hezekiah also had said, “What is the sign that I will go up to the LORD’s house?”
39:1At that time, Merodach-baladan the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to Hezekiah, for he heard that he had been sick, and had recovered. 2Hezekiah was pleased with them, and showed them the house of his precious things, the silver, the gold, the spices, and the precious oil, and all the house of his armor, and all that was found in his treasures. There was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah didn’t show them. 3Then Isaiah the prophet came to King Hezekiah, and asked him, “What did these men say? From where did they come to you?” Hezekiah said, “They have come from a country far from me, even from Babylon.” 4Then he asked, “What have they seen in your house?” Hezekiah answered, “They have seen all that is in my house. There is nothing among my treasures that I have not shown them.” 5Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the LORD of Armies: 6‘Behold, the days are coming when all that is in your house, and that which your fathers have stored up until today, will be carried to Babylon. Nothing will be left,’ says the LORD. 7‘They will take away your sons who will issue from you, whom you shall father, and they will be eunuchs in the king of Babylon’s palace.’” 8Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The LORD’s word which you have spoken is good.” He said moreover, “For there will be peace and truth in my days.”
Psalm 46 WEB
1God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas; 3though its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with their swelling. Selah. 4There is a river, the streams of which make the city of God glad, the holy place of the tents of the Most High. 5God is within her. She shall not be moved. God will help her at dawn. 6The nations raged. The kingdoms were moved. He lifted his voice and the earth melted. 7The LORD of Armies is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. 8Come, see the LORD’s works, what desolations he has made on the earth. 9He makes wars cease to the end of the earth. He breaks the bow, and shatters the spear. He burns the chariots in the fire. 10“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted on the earth.” 11The LORD of Armies is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
Psalm 48 WEB
1Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, in the city of our God, in his holy mountain. 2Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion, on the north sides, the city of the great King. 3God has shown himself in her citadels as a refuge. 4For, behold, the kings assembled themselves, they passed by together. 5They saw it, then they were amazed. They were dismayed. They hurried away. 6Trembling took hold of them there, pain, as of a woman in travail. 7With the east wind, you break the ships of Tarshish. 8As we have heard, so we have seen, in the city of the LORD of Armies, in the city of our God. God will establish it forever. Selah. 9We have thought about your loving kindness, God, in the middle of your temple. 10As is your name, God, so is your praise to the ends of the earth. Your right hand is full of righteousness. 11Let Mount Zion be glad! Let the daughters of Judah rejoice because of your judgments. 12Walk about Zion, and go around her. Number its towers. 13Notice her bulwarks. Consider her palaces, that you may tell it to the next generation. 14For this God is our God forever and ever. He will be our guide even to death.
Psalm 76 WEB
1In Judah, God is known. His name is great in Israel. 2His tabernacle is also in Salem. His dwelling place in Zion. 3There he broke the flaming arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the weapons of war. Selah. 4Glorious are you, and excellent, more than mountains of game. 5Valiant men lie plundered, they have slept their last sleep. None of the men of war can lift their hands. 6At your rebuke, God of Jacob, both chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep. 7You, even you, are to be feared. Who can stand in your sight when you are angry? 8You pronounced judgment from heaven. The earth feared, and was silent, 9when God arose to judgment, to save all the afflicted ones of the earth. Selah. 10Surely the wrath of man praises you. The survivors of your wrath are restrained. 11Make vows to the LORD your God, and fulfill them! Let all of his neighbors bring presents to him who is to be feared. 12He will cut off the spirit of princes. He is feared by the kings of the earth.
2 Kings 20 WEB
1In those days Hezekiah was sick and dying. Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came to him, and said to him, “The LORD says, ‘Set your house in order; for you will die, and not live.’” 2Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed to the LORD, saying, 3“Remember now, LORD, I beg you, how I have walked before you in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly. 4Before Isaiah had gone out into the middle part of the city, the LORD’s word came to him, saying, 5“Turn back, and tell Hezekiah the prince of my people, ‘The LORD, the God of David your father, says, “I have heard your prayer. I have seen your tears. Behold, I will heal you. On the third day, you will go up to the LORD’s house. 6I will add to your days fifteen years. I will deliver you and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for my own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.”’” 7Isaiah said, “Take a cake of figs.” They took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered. 8Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “What will be the sign that the LORD will heal me, and that I will go up to the LORD’s house the third day?” 9Isaiah said, “This will be the sign to you from the LORD, that the LORD will do the thing that he has spoken: should the shadow go forward ten steps, or go back ten steps?” 10Hezekiah answered, “It is a light thing for the shadow to go forward ten steps. No, but let the shadow return backward ten steps.” 11Isaiah the prophet cried to the LORD; and he brought the shadow ten steps backward, by which it had gone down on the sundial of Ahaz. 12At that time Berodach Baladan the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to Hezekiah, for he had heard that Hezekiah had been sick. 13Hezekiah listened to them, and showed them all the storehouse of his precious things—the silver, the gold, the spices, and the precious oil, and the house of his armor, and all that was found in his treasures. There was nothing in his house, or in all his dominion, that Hezekiah didn’t show them. 14Then Isaiah the prophet came to King Hezekiah, and said to him, “What did these men say? From where did they come to you?” Hezekiah said, “They have come from a far country, even from Babylon.” 15He said, “What have they seen in your house?” Hezekiah answered, “They have seen all that is in my house. There is nothing among my treasures that I have not shown them.” 16Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the LORD’s word. 17‘Behold, the days come that all that is in your house, and that which your fathers have laid up in store to this day, will be carried to Babylon. Nothing will be left,’ says the LORD. 18‘They will take away some of your sons who will issue from you, whom you will father; and they will be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.’” 19Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The LORD’s word which you have spoken is good.” He said moreover, “Isn’t it so, if peace and truth will be in my days?” 20Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and all his might, and how he made the pool, and the conduit, and brought water into the city, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? 21Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and Manasseh his son reigned in his place.
