Romans 8:31–39 WEB

31What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32He who didn’t spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how would he not also with him freely give us all things? 33Who could bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who justifies. 34Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, yes rather, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Could oppression, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36Even as it is written, “For your sake we are killed all day long. We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” 37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Background and context

Paul ends with a series of questions: If God is for us, who is against us? Who will bring a charge? Who will separate us from Christ’s love? He quotes Psalm 44:22, a lament about suffering for God’s sake, before declaring that nothing in all creation can separate us from God’s love.

Observe

  • God did not spare his own Son (8:32).
  • Christ intercedes for us (8:34).
  • Paul lists hardships that do not separate (8:35).
  • He quotes Psalm 44:22 (8:36).
  • Nothing in all creation can separate us (8:38-39).

Words, people and events to notice

Intercede
To plead on behalf of someone. Both the Spirit (8:26-27) and Christ (8:34) intercede. Romans 8:26–27Romans 8:34

Understand

  1. What answers does Paul give to his own questions?
  2. Why quote a lament (Psalm 44:22) in a passage of confidence?
  3. What does “more than conquerors” mean when hardships continue?

Connect

Reflect

  1. Which item in Paul’s list (8:35, 38-39) do you fear most?
  2. How could this passage shape how you face it?
