Reading: Philippians 4:4–9

Philippians 4:4–9 WEB

4Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I will say, “Rejoice!” 5Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. 6In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. 8Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report: if there is any virtue and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9Do the things which you learned, received, heard, and saw in me, and the God of peace will be with you.

Background and context

Good study starts by looking. In Nehemiah’s day the law was read and its sense explained so the people understood (Nehemiah 8:8). Observation means noticing words, repetitions, commands, promises, contrasts and connecting words, without yet asking what they mean for you.

Observe

  • “Rejoice” appears twice in verse 4; repetition shows emphasis.
  • There are commands (rejoice, let your gentleness be known, don’t be anxious, pray, think, do) and a promise (God’s peace will guard you).
  • Connecting words such as “but” and “and” show how the ideas link (verse 6).
  • Verses 8 and 9 move from what to think about to what to practise.

Words, people and events to notice

Observation
Seeing what is there: who, what, when, where, and the shape of the passage, before interpreting it.

Understand

  1. List every command in Philippians 4:4-9.
  2. What is promised, and to whom?
  3. How do verses 8-9 relate to verses 6-7?

Connect

Reflect

  1. Did you notice anything new by looking slowly?
  2. Try comparing this passage in two versions. What differences do you see?

Key takeaways
